Human Rights & the Arts Education Program

Bring human rights issues to your classroom through arts education residency programs.

Education & the Power of Art

Art wields tremendous power to engage young minds.

Learning about human rights is as fundamental to a student's education as math and science.

the gray space offers a human rights and the arts education program designed to engage students and provide ways to use art as a tool for human rights work.

Human Rights, the Arts, and Your Students

Your students will connect to a unique area of human rights, while also exploring their own potential for creative expression. They will discover their abilities as writers and engage in "on-your-feet" performance exercises. From these exercises, your students will create material to be built into a performance presented at the end of the residency.

The gray space workshops utilize core principles of Agusto Boal's Theatre of the Opressed. The focus of each exercise will center on a specific human rights issue that the students feel is important to them. A focus for the residency can be customized and will be developed with your students in mind.

Residencies

Budgeting time and money is always a challenge for educators. the gray space realizes this and offers flexible residency opportunities. From a single day to a more time-intensive residency, the gray space Performance Company will work to accommodate any special situations. We will also tailor the cost to fit the needs of your budget; let us help you bring human rights issues to your students.

Human Rights violations, in any form, impact how we all live our lives.

the gray space residency opportunities allow your students to explore the effect of human rights violations, in our own country and on a global scale. Learn about world issues and cultures through writing and theater workshops. Residencies expose your students not only to human rights issues but also address geography, humanities, history and current events.
